President Peter Mutharika Shuns Signing Of Peace Declaration

The Malawi President, Arthur Peter Mutharika failed to attend National Prayers for the signing of the Peace Declaration in Lilongwe on Saturday, May 2, 2019.

The Office of the President and Cabinet issued a notice, which indicated that, President Mutharika was preoccupied with travelling to Mzuzu and therefore wouldn’t attend the national event.

Technically, in accordance with the hierarchy imposed by the Republican Constitution, President Mutharika was during the event represented by his second in command, Vice President Saulos Chilima.

Apart from the Vice President, Mutharika was also represented by another member of his cabinet, Atupele Muluzi who is Minister of Health.

On party representantion, Lazarus Chakwera held the banner of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Saulos Chilima of UTM, Atupele Muluzi of United Democratic Front (UDF), John Chisi of Umodzi Party (UP), Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for National Development and Reverend Kaliya an Independent Candidate.
