Motor cyclist gets 18 months imprisonment for causing death by reckless riding

Blantyre Magistrate court has convicted and sentenced a 27 year old motorcycle rider to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for the offences of causing death by reckless driving.

According to blantyre public relstion officer Augustus Nkhwazi operating a motor cycle without insurance and operating a motor cycle without driving licence in contravention to the Road Traffic Act (RTA).

“We received a report that Atusaye Fatson Msiska of Kutela village traditional authority Mwalweni in Rumphi on April 19, 2019 at around 06 55 hours was riding unregistered motor cycle Lifo from Manje heading St. Columba along Kapeni road in Blantyre”.

“reporter contienued that on his arrival at Soche Quarry Intersection, he hit a male pedestrian who was crossing the road from left to right”, explains Nkhwazi

He added that the victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital by welwishers where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Nkhwazi said he Appeared before court on April 30, 2019 accused was found guilty of all the three counts he was charged with.

However,Passing the sentence, First Grade Magistrate Tsoka Banda sentenced Atusaye Msiska to eighteen months imprisonment with hard labour without an option of a fine saying this should save as a warning to those using motor cycles or vehicles without proper documentations as required by the law.

The deceased Chikumbutso Chikonga 23 hailed from Masala village traditional authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.
