Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu Manda was seen distributing money to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) monitors and election presiding officers in several centres in Chikwawa on Tuesday.
Eye witnesses said Nyamilandu was using his BMW X5 vehicle and had loads of cash in the car which he was distributing to the elections officers.
“I was a roving monitor and I saw this guy in several centres. He was targeting DPP monitors and in the process reached out to presiding officers,” said an independent monitor John Mitengana.
DPP insiders said Nyamilandu had K10 million in cash in his vehicle which he was distributing to the elections officers.
DPP regional Governor for the South Charles Mchacha confirmed in an interview that indeed Nyamilandu was their man and was sent on an errand.
“Walter Nyamilandu is our man and he is a good man. He has helped the party in so many ways and if he was giving money in Chikwawa, what’s wrong with that?” Wondered Mchacha.
It is against electoral laws to distribute money and other gifts to voters let alone election presiding officers on polling day.
Nyamilandu was also seen wearing a DPP barrette and cheering President Peter Mutharika when he was passing through Chigumula township during the campaign trail.
FIFA bars football administrators from participating in active politics like the way Nyamilandu is doing.
Some sports administrators said they are going to report the matter to FIFA and Nyamilandu maybe banned for life from any football activities if found guilty.
Nyamilandu is one of the senior managers at Illovo Malawi Limited.
