Mobility along Robert Mugabe Highway popularity known by its old name, Midima road has experienced a major setback following the burning of Thuchira Bridge at Nkando in Mulanje district.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians on both sides of the bridge got stranded when early on the morning of Tuesday they found the key bridge charred after it was reportedly set ablaze by a lunatic.
A visit to the scene on the morning of Tuesday found motorists on both sides of the road parked in a queue knowing what to do next.
District authorities and residents of Nkando suspect that the bridge which was made of almost 80 percent of wooden framework was set on fire by the madman during the night of Monday at around 22:00 hrs.
Information has it that, for the past years, a madman has been dwelling under the bridge and it is believed that, prior to arson, the lunatic was warming himself with the fire that he lit before it caught the wooden framework of the bridge.
Meanwhile, motorists travelling between Limbe and Mulanje can access both places through Thyolo Boma and Luchenza Municipality.
During the floods in the past rainy season, the route via Nkando was also impassable for a few days as the wooden plunks were washed away by the raging waters.
