Cops Pressure Mutharika To Boot Deputy IG, Director of HR
Pressure is mounting on the embattled Malawi President, Arthur Peter Mutharika to fire Deputy Inspector General (IG) of Police, Duncan Mwapasa and Director of Human Resource (HR) in Police Service, Joseph Chambuluka, Malawi Freedom Network has learnt.
A group of concerned men in uniform who are also as “men of discipline”, have petitioned Mutharika, to urgently address their concerns or else they put up a warning that they will withdraw from their services.
In an articulate list of reasons backing their demands, the men in uniform accuse their Deputy IG for being the catalyst in the promotion of tribalism above professionalism in Police service.
The law enforcers also accuse Mwapasa of reducing the status of the police service to level of a mere political party, through questionable directives, that reduce professional officers to the dot of the ruling party boys.
On the part of Director of HR, the concerned officers claim that, the man in question, Joseph Chambuluka is currently serving illegally past his retirement period, after all, he was supposed to retire some three years ago.
In essence, the police officers accuse the two top dogs in the service for putting the whole service in disrepute and loss of credibility in the public eye.
The police pressure on Mutharika comes shortly after Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers demanded the booting of Army Chief, General Spoon Phiri over misappropriation of allowances during peace keeping operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In his succumb to pressure from the soldiers, Mutharika had some two weeks ago replaced Spoon Phiri with Vincent Dundwe.
