Woman Convicted For Causing Noise Pollution

Woman in Chikwawa district, Mary Mwaipape, had on Wednesday paid a fine of 35,000 Malawi Kwacha after court found her guilty of noise pollution.

Police arrested the convict in the wee hours of Wednesday and charged her with Common Nuisance, a charge she admiited.

Chikwawa First Grade Magistrate heard that, for a long time, people around the tavern, which the woman operates have been complaining about loud noise, throughout the night, until dawn, coming from the bar of the accused.

The accused paid the fine after court gave her option that, in default, she should serve 12 months in prison.

The offence contravenes Section 168 of the Penal Code and attracts a maximum sentence of 12 months in jail.
