Gender Minister, Mary Navicha Visits People With Albinism

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Thom Navicha has on Friday visited people with albinism from around Mitundu area in Lilongwe rural.

The Minister’s visit was aimed at getting an update on personal life experiences of the endangered members of the society.

During the visit, the Minister was accompanied by some officials from her ministry, who joined her in interacting with people with albinism from the area.

Among other sad experiences, people with albinism from the area, have been living in fear, amid concerns of their personal security, following the recent registered increase in thier abductions and killings.

Following a spate of ruthless and brutal killings, Malawi, a country known for its deep rooted religious beliefs, has in recent times been listed among the places where people with albinism live dangerously, as they have mercilessly been hunted and killed like animals for their body parts and bones, which speculation has it that their body parts and bones are used for rituals.

The High Court in the country is currently prosecuting cases of suspected albino killers with a Roman Catholic Priest, Fr. Thomas Muhosha from Zomba Diocese among the key suspects.
