.MALAWI CONGRESS PARTY SOLIDARITY WITH CITIZEN PROTESTS
(For Immediate Release)
The nationwide protests of Tuesday, August 6, 2019, will go down in our nation’s history as representing a day of reckoning for the corrupt and crumbling DPP regime.
As such, the Malawi Congress Party wishes to commend all Malawians of good will who flooded the streets of Malawi to exercise their constitutional right to protest.
Our preliminary observation is that the majority of protesters did so peacefully and lawfully, despite failed efforts from the Tippex government to secure a court injunction to infringe on that sacred right.
Malawians who thus marched have every reason to feel proud that they made history by being part of a day on which the power of the people prevailed over the people in power.
However, we are also aware that despite the peaceful and orderly conduct of most Malawians during the demonstrations, a few criminals and lawless individuals, who fit the profile of cadets, managed to infiltrate the ranks of the protests.
As a result, while 95% of those marching on the streets did so peacefully in accordance with the organizers’ protocols and orientation for peaceful conduct, these few lawless individuals used the occasion as an opportunity to discredit and stain the protests by vandalizing shops belonging to innocent and hard working citizens, even though many in the private sector are in support of the right of Malawians to protest peacefully.
We believe it is these criminals who harassed a female police officer and stripped her of her clothing, exposing her to public disgrace and trauma.
We also believe it is these criminals who even desecrated the public mausoleum in City Centre, a national monument that serves as the resting place for the Father and Founder of Malawi, the late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
As an institution that promotes and practices the rule of law, the Malawi Congress Party hereby condemns all such lawless acts in the strongest possible terms and denounces the perpetrators as enemies of Malawi’s prosperity, liberty, and peace.
We will therefore double our efforts to see to it that they fail miserably, for we are neither deterred nor deflated in our resolve to stand with Malawians who are demanding justice now.
Meanwhile, we are urging the Malawi Police Service to respond to these acts of violence professionally even as they bring all perpetrators to book.
