MALAWIANS HOLD DEMOS SHAMING GOVERNMENT
Malawians on Tuesday 6th August, 2019 held peaceful demonstrations in the country’s major cities of Lilongwe, Zomba and Blantyre with Mzuzu for the first time leading by example recording no violence reported.
The Tuesday’s nationwide demonstrations were held complementing Malawians vows that they will go to the streets with or no HRDC should the High Court sitting in Lilongwe ruled in favour of government which filed an injunction stopping further post_ election demonstrations until the presidential tippex election case is concluded.
Despite Judge Kenyata Nyirenda threwing off an application to stop the demonstrations, WhatsApp messages were washed up with information late Monday evening on the cancellation of the much anticipated demos on 6th and 7th August, and all the future demonstrations pending a court determination.
In the reports which proved fake, the HRDC was reported to have notified the public that all the demos planned and the subsequent vigils were cancelled.
The fake letter forged Timothy Mtambo’s signature saying the HRDC leadership was reported to the International Criminal Court of Justice and the US government as a risk of being banned for further criminal action should any acts of violence take place.
Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communications Technology, Mark Botomani, issued his press statement saying all councils in Malawi have not granted the HRDC permission to conduct demonstrations in the country’s major cities but this was just a dream with Malawians waking up to the demos ready to die for the country.
While many lost hope that the demos were cancelled, radio coverage reached out to many who came in their large number to make the one million march a success putting to shame government which tried its best to stop the demonstrations until the HRDC pays 2 billion Kwacha surety before they take to the streets.
And on the sad note the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority ( MACRA) on 6th August while Malawians were on the streets protesting calling for the head of Mec Chairperson Justice Dr. Mrs. Jane Ansah sc to resign, issued a warning to all media houses banning demonstrations live coverage.
