Malawi’s 31st International Trade Fair Opens, President Mutharika, Government Officials Not In Attendance
Surprise took central stage at the Thursday’s opening of the 31st International Trade Fair at Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre as for the first time in five years, the head of state and government has failed to attend the trade promotional and investor attracting endeavour.
On the President Mutharika’s failure to attend the opening of the fair, Chancellor Kaferapanjira who is the top official at the organising Malawi Conferederation of Chambers, Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) declined to comment.
He however said, this is not the first time for the opening of the International Annual Trade Fair to happen without the President.
Malawi Freedom Network (MFN) has also observed, that there was no single government official neither representing President Peter Mutharika nor represent specific the line ministry of Trade and Industry.
Speech by Malawi Conferderation of Chambers, Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), Exective Officer, Chancellor Kaferapanjira who officially opened the fair, and also from other extracted information by our reporters, reveal less participation of both local and international exhibitors.
In total, 189 exhibitors have participated in this year’s Trade Fair.
Among the exbitors, only three countries, namely, Bangladesh, Zambia and Mozambique have participated.
The current volatile political situation in the country, amid nationwide elections aftermath protests has, according to several “would be” potential exhibitors, led to the less and unimpressive participation of both local and international exhibitors.
