4 Nabbed For Going Ahead With Demos
A total of 4 people suspected to be ringleaders that mobilised people to demonstrate in the northern region district of Karonga are in police custody after Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers arrested them and handed them over to police.
Police Publicist in the district, Sub Inspector Enock Diverson has confirmed the arrest, saying soldiers arrested the 4 people at Karonga roundabout as they were mobilising people to participate in the illigitimate demonstrations.
Earlier on the morning of Tuesday, a car with loudspeakers is said to have been moving around town and locations mobilising people to partake in the vigils despite the court injunction.
The MDF soldiers had also punished other people manning the car with loud speakers by ordering them to move around town and spread the message about the court injunction, which said the demos should be put on hold for 14 days to allow the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and Attorney General (AG) to hold talks.
According to Police, the 4 suspects will appear in court to answer charges of Contempt of Court for defying a Court Order and also for Spreading wrong information contrary to section 60 of the Penal Code.
The Supreme Court Appeal had on the night of Tuesday granted the AG an injunction restraining the HRDC from organising demonstrations in the country for 14 days to pave way for talks between the AG and HRDC.
