GOVERNMENT TO ROLL OUT NCRP PROGRAM IN DOWA

Government says weak implementation of climate change related policies, poor governance and uncoordinated approaches, are some of the gaps in the management of climate change.

Speaking during a District executive council committee meeting held at the Dowa boma, Principal Environmental Officer in the ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Mphatso Kalemba, said the program has a goal of accountable, inclusive, and effective implementation of climate change policies and programs for resilient ecosystems and communities .

Kalemba said the NCRP is a cross sectoral approach of working together as one team and not individually in the implementation of activities for impact.

She said government has introduced a- 5 year , National Climate Resilience Program( NCRP) ( 2019_2023) to be implemented in all the districts where Bua river passes to the Lake Malawi.

The officer said Dec committees of the six districts, Kasungu, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe, Mchinji,, Dowa and Ntchisi will decide on the size, activities and management plan for the program to be implemented smoothly and a success.

Dowa District council’s Meteorologist, Manfred Kadzuwa, asked the ministry responsible to study the rainfall patterns of each of the six districts saying this is a good factor leading to the effective implementation of the program.

In his remarks, Dowa district ( MACOHA) Rehabilitation Officer, Billy Maupa, pleaded with the programs committee to take on board persons with disabilities saying most of them suffer exclusions .

Maupa said some persons with disabilities can deliver a good work if given a chance hence a great need to include them in the program.

The NCRP will be implemented along the districts where Bua river passes with support from UNDP amounting to 2,500,000 US Dollars.
