CHEWAS ACCUSE THEMSELVES OF ENVY , JEALOUSY
One of the Chewa chief in Dowa district has accused fellow Chewa chiefs of Jealousy and envy as evidenced by the holding of a parallel Chewa meeting 3 kms away from the Bwalo la a Chewa launch in the district on Saturday, 7th September, 2019.
People were awakened during the midnight of 6th September, when a vehicle with loudspeakers was moving around the Dowa boma calling all the Chewas to an important meeting at Gawamadzi village in the area of T/A Chiwere so that they shun Bwalo la a Chewa launch at the Dowa community centre ground in the district.
The meeting took place at Kaluzi village in the area instead of Gawamadzi after Village headman Gawamadzi allegedly said no to the meeting as Bwalo la a Chewa was holding a government function within the boma itself.
Speaking in a strict condition of anonymity, the chief described the Chewa parallel meeting as an act of terror against fellow Chewas saying the meeting was ill timed and meant to bring confusions and dividing the Chewas in the district.
Village head woman Kaluzi said she was not aware of the meeting but only saw vehicles with strange faces and loudspeakers coming to address the meeting.
Kaluzi said the speakers of the meeting brought one message of encouraging the Chewa youth to preserve their culture.
Dowa district Chewa Heritage Foundation ( CHEFO) Cultural chairman, Mr Jickson Banda of Kaluzi village distanced CHEFO from holding such a parallel Chewa meeting saying all of what he knew was that Bwalo la a Chewa was to be launched and tombstone unveiling Chewa ceremony at Nkhulumbwe village in the area.
Banda said he even went to the family of the tombstone unveiling to change the date for a big event of Bwalo la a Chewa, but this was denied by the family.
He appealed to all the Chewas in the district to be free in joining any Chewa grouping of their choice other than planning to disrupt what fellow Chewas have set as evidenced on that day.
Speaking during the launch, National Executive Director of Bwalo la a Chewa Foundation ( BOLA- CEFO), Reverend Flywell Somanje, asked all the Chewas in Malawi to love one another and not to pull each other backward.
Rev. Somanje lamented that the Chewas beside having the largest population of over 13 million people do not love each other unlike other tribal groups saying this has probably contributed to the Chewas missing on the cultural calendar of events in Malawi.
However, a confidential source has alleged that some politicians in the district are behind urging the Chewas in the district not to honour and respect His Royal Highness Paramount chief Dr. Lundu of Chikwawa, patron of Bwalo la a Chewa claiming that he is not a Chewa from central region.
