DPP Supporters Attack HRDC Leaders…Hack Activist Billy Mayaya…MCP Veep Sidik Mia Visit Him In Hospital
Hell broke loose in the commercial City of Blantyre when on Wednesday morning, some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters turned violent hence descended on Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) leaders before spilling blood of human rights activist Billy Mayaya.
It all started when protesters in the anti- Jane Ansah match were about to pass by Comesa Hall on their way to Mount Soche Hotel where they wanted to present a petition that DPP supporters blocked their way and started pelting stones at them.
The DPP supporters are said to have come from Comesa Hall where DPP Vice President for the South, Kondwani Nankhumwa was opening an Agriculture Fair.
Almost immediately, the DPP supporters descended on HRDC leaders as protesters run into different directions for their dear life.
They descended on HRDC official and activist Billy Mayaya and in the process hacked him and only left him when they noticed he had fallen to ground.
Good Samaritans rushed Mayaya to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was assisted before moving him to a private hospital within the city of Blantyre.
Later, following his admission, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Vice President Sidik Mia visited him at hospital.
During the mayhem, some officials from key political parties who came to take part in the demos sought refuge at the Chichiri army camp while many other protesters sought refuge within the confines of QECH.
Malawi Freedom Network (MFN) can confirm that UTM Party Vice President, Michael Usi and MCP Campaign Director Moses Kumkuyu were among the officials who sought refuge at Malawi Defense Force (MDF) camp at Chichiri.
As it happened, the police only stood watching before moving in to disperse the protesters with teargas and then focused their attention on protecting the DPP crowds as they took charge marching along the highway towards the heart of Blantyre.
There was no immediate comment from the DPP Spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi who when contacted asked for more time to investigate about the involvement of DPP supporters in the mayhem.
The HRDC had organised the match in order to present their petition to SADC Executive Secretary at Mount Soche in Blantyre where a week-long conference of SADC Election Commissioners taking place.
In the petition, the HRDC wanted to convey the message about their displeasure over their participation in the conference where they are aware that the key speaker during the conference, Justice Jane Ansah who is Chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was being accused of messing up the May 2019 elections.
In essence, the HRDC are pressing for Ansah to step down from her position.
