Malawi Government Rewards Police Officers For Crushing Peaceful Demonstrators
The recent crushing of peaceful demonstrators by men in uniform in Blantyre has finally attracted a proverbial “scratch on the back” as government has rewarded police officers across the country by paying them 80,000 Malawi Kwacha (MK) each.
According to an intensified media investigation, policemen got paid the money on top of their salary through their bank accounts during the month-end of September, 2019.
Some officers who did not want their names to be revealed told our investigating reporters, that they got a surprise of their life time on the job when they thought like they were dreaming to notice the cash balance of more than their salary with an overage of MK 80,000 which later transpired to be a “thank you” token from the powers that be.
The move, according to police inside sources has been propelled by the newly appointed Inspector General (IG), Duncan Mwapatsa who is said to be doing everything to prove to both the appointing powers and his juniors that he is capable of better handling the police service more than his predecessor, former IG, Rodney Jose whose contract, government had not renewed at the expiry of his duty term.
Known to be the favourite of the President Peter Mutharika and his top brass in the ruling DPP, Mwapatsa faces accusation of being a mere cadet than a professional from the opposition parties as well as the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC).
