CHIKWAWA, SOUTHERN MALAWI

Police at Mkumaniza Border in Chikwawa District have arrested a hospital worker on suspicion that he stole medical drugs from his workplace.

Public Relations Officer for Chikwawa Police Station, Foster Benjamin identified the suspect as Yohane Mirambe, 41, who was arrested Thursday [3 October, 2019] morning at Mkumaniza border.

“Mirambe, a hospital attendant at Mkumaniza Health Centre, was heading to Mozambique when he was intercepted by police officers at the border.

“The law enforcers searched his bag and discovered assorted drugs which include three cartons of LA drugs, 1000 tablets of aspirin and 1000 tablets of fragile. The drugs were immediately seized leading to the suspect’s arrest,” explained Benjamin.

He said the suspect is facing a theft by servant charge and will likely appear in court next week to answer the charge.

Benjamin said the value of the drugs is not yet established.

Mirambe comes from Timbenao village in the area of Senior Chief Chapananga in the district.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to the public to tip them about any drug theft in a move to bring all perpetrators to justice.
