TWO DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENT IN DOWA
Two people have died while three others have sustained injuries in a road accident which happened on Tuesday in Dowa District.
The deceased have been identified as Edson Thom (adult) from Kalulu Village and Evance Jonasi, 47, from Nkhalamba Village, whereas those injured have been identified as Katengeza Tonde, 47, from Kalulu Village, Sefasi Lyson, 23, from Kalulu Village and Kondwani Chigunda, 29, from Chasentha Village, all from the area of Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe.
The accident which happened at Lumbadzi Bridge along Lilongwe-Salima Road involved three motor vehicles registration number BU 2901 Scania, driven by Katengeza Tonde, MH 8083 Scania Van, driven by Daniel Kafoteka, 39, from Kaomba Village, Traditional Authority Kaomba in Kasungu and MHG 4671 Mazda Bongo minibus, driven by Happy whose full particulars not advised who fled from the scene.
Traffic Police report indicate that on the day of the accident, motor vehicle registration number BU 2901 Scania was coming from Salima to Lilongwe direction with four passengers and load of sand on board.
As the driver was approaching Lumbadzi Bridge while descending a curve slope, there were two motor vehicles in front him registration number MHG 4671 Mazda Bongo which had one passenger on board and motor vehicle registration number MH 8083 Scania Van which had one passenger on board and in the process, the driver of the motor vehicle registration number BU 2901 Scania decided to overtake both motor vehicles which were in front of him.
In the course of overtaking, the driver of the motor vehicle registration number MH 8083 and finally hit the second motor vehicle registration number MHG 4871.
Following the impact, motor vehicle registration number BU 2901 rested into Lumbadzi River and Edson Thom sustained severe head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene by medical officials from Dowa District Hospital while Evance Jonasi sustained severe head injuries and died at Kamuzu Central Hospital while receiving treatment.
The driver of the motor vehicle registration number BU 2901, Katengeza Tonde, suffered fractures on both legs and was referred to Dowa District Hospital while Sefasi Lyson suffered facial bruises and painful left legs and Kondwani Chigunda suffered bruises on both legs and no injuries were recorded from the occupants of motor vehicle registration number MH 8083 Scania Van and motor vehicle registration number MHG 4671 Mazda Bongo minibus while motor vehicle registration number BU 2901 was extensively damaged and motor vehicle registration number MH 8083 got its rear indicator lamps broken.
