National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust says the police have a responsibility to ensure that suspects and convicts in their custody still enjoy their fundamental human rights and dignity. Speaking in Balaka during an impromptu visit with various stakeholder to the police holding cells, Balaka NICE District Civic Education Officer Henry Zechariah said "equal access to justice is a right based on human rights obligation which guarantees against exclusion and inequality". “With funding from European Union we are implementing ‘Chilungamo Programme' aimed at enhancing access to justice of suspects and convicts" he added. Three Govt Officials Arrested For Human Trafficking

Three government officials have been arrested for their alleged involvement in human trafficking. Two of the three are police officers from Kamuzu International Airport whilst the third one is medic at Kamuzu Central Hospital. Their arrest has come amidst reports that forty Malawian nationals earlier trafficked to Oman are struggling and stuck. Jean Sendeza, Minister of Homeland Security said the arrest of the three is an indication of governments commitment to ending human trafficking. Meanwhile, Vera Kantukule, minister of labour has told MIJ Online that absence of a bilateral relationship between Malawi and Oman was making it difficult for government to bring Malawians trapped in Oman back home.

Mzuzu City Mayor Defilement Case Adjourned To Next Month

Mzuzu Child Justice Court has adjourned to 4th October 2022, hearing of the case in which Mzuzu City mayor Gift Desire Nyirenda is being accused of defiling his 14-year-old niece. The court was supposed to start hearing the case today. During the supposed first hearing of the case, it was revealed that the State did not serve disclosure documents to the defence team. Senior Resident Magistrate, Felix Kamtsalira, adjourned the case to 4 October so that the State should prepare its documents and lineup its witnesses before the commencement of the full trial. The accused person was arrested on 12 August and granted bail on 19 August 2022.

In a bid to increase its swiftness in attending to crime, Limbe Police Station has introduced 'My phone My Zone Security Initiative'. According to the station's Officer In-charge, Gladson Chipumphula, under the initiative, they have secured dedicated toll-free codes for all their six policing zones. Chipumphula said officers who are already in these areas will be attending to various calls seeking police assistance. "MACRA has given us these short emergency toll-free lines. We hope that with this initiative we will further scale down the crime rate," said Chipumphula. The officer-in-charge has since called upon the general public not to abuse the emergency lines. Authorities in Mangochi are raising concerns over an increase in cases of divorce. It is reported that not less than 10 couples are filing for divorce every day in the district. Such cases according to Senior Resident Magistrate for Mangochi, Rodrick Michongwe, are resulting in child maintenance applications and where children are not being supported, they are turning to the streets. "Some women are filing for divorce on grounds that their husbands have stayed in South Africa for a long period without coming back home. Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director for Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative - CDEDI has given the Malawi Police Service 14 days to provide an update on his abduction case. According to Namiwa, it is a month now since he was abducted, but the Police has not released any update on how far they have gone with the investigations despite him sharing with them names of the thugs as part of the evidence. Deputy Minister of Education, Monica Chang'anamuno, says this year's Malawi School Certificate of Education Examinations (MSCE) have started well. Chang'anamuno said this when she inspected, some centres on the first day of the examinations. Among other places, the Deputy Minister visited Chowo Community Day Secondary school (CDSS) where 95 students are sitting for the exams. The Deputy Minister is also expected to inspect Nkhoma and Matapila CDSS today. 152, 000 students are sitting for MSCE examinations this year representing a 24% increase from last year's figure.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is tonight launching a taxpayer charter, a document which spells out how taxpayers will be served when dealing with tax adminstration through multiple channels within the tax syatem. The charter, as a public performance tool, aims to cultivate and strengthen the confidence that taxpayers have in the tax adminstration system, while simultaneously building a new relationship with taxpayers based on mutual trust and respect.
