National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) anticipates buying 22,000 metric tonnes of maize from the K12 billion received from government. NFRA Board Chairperson, Denis Kalekeni disclosed this Friday during Media briefing on the update on Procurement of Maize for Replenishment of the National Strategic Grain Reserves in Lilongwe. He said the Agency has so far received K6 billion through Ministry of Agriculture and they are anticipating procuring about 11, 000 metric tonnes of Maize. “The agency issued a public notice that it had opened the market for procurement of Strategic Grain Reserve (SGR) maize with effect from May 29, 2023 and that market would remain open up to September 30, 2023 or upon reaching targeted quantity, subject to market dynamics,” Kalekeni said. The former Finance Minister, Joseph Mwanamveka has attributed scarcity of forex in the country as a result of poor economic policies which government is following. Goshen Trust has said it will start purchasing maize to help local farmers in the country sale their produce locally. The buying of maize starts at Luwinga in Mzuzu on June 12 and ends on August 12, with a kilogram being bought at K560. In a statement, the Goshen Trust said it will buy 5000 metric tons of white Non-GMO maize that meets certain standard specifications. Specifications are that such maize should have been produced in 2022 and 2023 and moisture content of maximum 12.5 percent, among others. "Our price is K560 per kilogram and the sale will be on the first come-first-serve principle within the slated period above. Payment will be on upon delivery," reads the statement.

By Moses Thole--CHIKWAWA 27-year old Mkwate Chimbizi is behind bars at Chikwawa Police for allegedly killing his wife after cutting off her breasts. He also removed her private parts before beheading her. It is further reported that the suspect threw the private parts and breasts in a pit latrine. South East Police Region spokesperson Edward Kabango has confirmed the heart-rending incident; adding Chimbizi suspected that her wife, Luwiza Leonard 23, had an extramarital affair. On Thursday, the suspect led officers to where he buried the victim's head but found it in a decomped state. Kabango says they are currently searching for the victim's body.
