BY DRAXON MALOYA Barely a fortnight since president Lazarus Chakwera visited Mzuzu City Markets, the shade housing Zigwagwa (Matabwa/timber) market has collapsed on Friday evening destroying assorted food items on sale. According to the Mzuzu City Vendors chairperson, Gerald Maulana, efforts are being made to assess the extent of the damage and find ways to support the affected fourty (40) women to rebuild their businesses. The market leadership has attributed the incident to poor construction of the shades and has called on the relevant authorities to intervene and provide a lasting solution to prevent future occurrences. Tanzania's Vice-President Philip Mpango has threatened to resign over a prolonged water shortage affecting residents from the northern Mwanga district. Mr Mpango on Thursday accused contractors working on a major project aimed at supplying water in the region of taking too long time to complete it. The project worth over $100,000 (£79,000) was started close to 20 years ago, according to Mr Mpango. "If this project will not be providing water [to the locals] by June, I will step down. I don't know what will be the fate of the local administrator and his juniors if I resign," Mr Mpango said. Kwacha depreciates by 3%

The Malawi kwacha has depreciated by three percent and will now be trading at K1 751 to dollar following foreign exchange auction conducted by the Reserve Bank of Malawi on Monday. In a communication to authorised dealer banks dated March 19 2024, the RBM said the forex auction in which four banks participated, was successful. The RBM said the minimum selling price of the kwacha against the dollar will now be at K1 751. Before the auction, the kwacha was trading at K1 700 against the dollar. RBM spokesperson Mark Lungu confirmed the auction took place.
