The political saga surrounding Dr. Michael Usi’s expulsion from the UTM Party continues to spark intense debate, with Edward Kambanje, a prominent voice among the Concerned Citizens, offering a scathing assessment of the former Vice President’s actions. According to Kambanje, Usi’s ousting was an inevitable step toward restoring order and unity within the party.
For Kambanje, the expulsion did not come as a surprise. He argues that Dr. Usi’s conduct in recent months painted a clear picture of discord. “This was foreseeable,” Kambanje remarked. “Usi’s behavior consistently undermined the unity and integrity of the UTM.”
At the heart of these accusations is Dr. Usi’s alleged involvement in mobilizing UTM supporters to attend government functions, despite the formal dissolution of the party’s alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). His continued public endorsement of the MCP while wearing UTM regalia was, in Kambanje’s view, a direct affront to the party’s principles.
Kambanje did not mince words when addressing Usi’s refusal to acknowledge the recent UTM convention and its new leadership. “It is perplexing to see someone clinging to supporters and party symbols while merely a member of the party,” he said.
The convention, Kambanje noted, was a democratic exercise that established a fresh leadership team. “Usi must accept that the leadership has changed. He cannot continue to act as if he holds power within the party,” Kambanje added.
Kambanje also touched on what he described as Dr. Usi’s primary goal—rebuilding the UTM-MCP alliance. With that mission now in tatters, Kambanje believes Usi finds himself politically adrift.
“Dr. Usi is under immense pressure,” Kambanje observed. “He needs to reassess his political trajectory. Time is running out, and the UTM must be allowed to move forward without distractions.”
Kambanje applauded the UTM’s leadership for making what he described as a bold but necessary decision. “Expelling Usi at this juncture is a welcome development,” he said. “The party can now focus on preparing for the 2025 general election with clarity and purpose.”
The expulsion of Dr. Michael Usi underscores the challenges political parties face in maintaining internal cohesion, particularly as elections draw near. For the UTM, this decision signals a commitment to discipline and strategic focus, qualities that will be essential as it seeks to secure its place in Malawi’s competitive political arena.
Kambanje’s remarks reflect the sentiments of many within the UTM, who see Usi’s expulsion as an opportunity to strengthen the party’s foundations. As the countdown to 2025 continues, the UTM’s ability to unify under its new leadership will determine its path forward.
