DPP presses MEC for transparency in electoral process

By Burnett Munthali

The Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Peter Mukhitho, has expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is managing the country’s electoral process.

Mukhitho stated that the DPP remains concerned about MEC’s lack of transparency and inclusivity in preparing for the upcoming elections.

He disclosed that the party has formally written to MEC requesting access to audit and verify the voter registration system but has not been granted that opportunity.

According to Mukhitho, denying opposition parties the chance to scrutinize such a critical process undermines public trust in the institution meant to oversee free and fair elections.

Echoing Mukhitho’s sentiments, the DPP’s Director of Elections, Jean Mathanga, emphasized the need for MEC to operate in a transparent manner.

Mathanga said that the electoral body must be open in all its dealings to regain the trust of the Malawian people.

She insisted that transparency is key if MEC is to maintain its credibility and deliver credible elections in 2025.
