In a dramatic turn of events on Malawi’s political scene, the mighty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) have officially entered into an electoral alliance with the National Development Party (NDP), led by seasoned politician Frank Mwenefumbo.

This powerful tripartite agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony attended by senior party officials and supporters, signaling a new chapter in the lead-up to the September 2025 elections.

The alliance is expected to strengthen the opposition’s bid to unseat the current administration, as it brings together regional diversity, political experience, and grassroots support from all corners of the country.

DPP, one of Malawi’s largest political parties with a solid support base in the Southern Region, is banking on this coalition to regain power after its 2020 court-sanctioned electoral defeat.

AFORD, a party with deep historical roots and strongholds in the Northern Region, adds political credibility and geographical balance to the alliance.

The inclusion of the National Development Party under Frank Mwenefumbo provides a strategic advantage by attracting urban and youth voters who have been drawn to Mwenefumbo’s reformist and developmental rhetoric.

At the signing ceremony, smiles, handshakes, and party regalia filled the venue as leaders affirmed their commitment to work together for the greater good of Malawians.

Photographs taken during the event captured moments of unity, cooperation, and optimism, symbolizing the coalition’s ambition to bring meaningful change to the nation.

The alliance is built on a shared agenda that includes good governance, economic recovery, the fight against corruption, and the restoration of public confidence in state institutions.

Observers say this united front could present a formidable challenge to the ruling party, especially if the alliance succeeds in coordinating campaign strategies and fielding joint candidates in parliamentary and local government elections.

The signing ceremony marks a milestone not just for the parties involved but also for the future of coalition politics in Malawi.

As political temperatures rise ahead of the 2025 general elections, this alliance may well redefine the race and offer voters a viable and united alternative.
