The Parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating the June 2024 military plane crash that killed former vice-president Saulos Chilima and eight others is today visiting the crash site at Nthungwa in Viphya Plantation, Nkhata Bay, as part of its ongoing inquiry into the tragedy.

The committee began its investigations yesterday with a visit to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe where the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Dornier aircraft departed on June 10, 2024 en route to Mzuzu Airport.No government officials attend memorial service for former VP Saulos Chilima
However, the aircraft failed to reach its destination after crashing in the Viphya Plantation forest, killing all nine people on board in one of Malawi’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.
Committee members led by chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda were, by the time of reporting, yet to arrive at the scene.

Several key officials had already arrived at the crash site, including Secretary for Health Dan Namarika, Police Commissioner for the Northern Region Glinton Mitai, former Mzuzu Central Hospital Director General John Chipolombwe, as well as senior military officers.Top news story of 2024: Saulos Chilima’s sudden death shocks Malawi
The parliamentary inquiry is expected to gather further information surrounding the circumstances of the crash, including flight operations, communication systems, weather conditions, and emergency response procedures connected to the incident..
