Former governing United Democratic Front-UDF views the revised Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC calendar on polling day for the 2025 general elections as a blessing in disguise; saying the extra time will enable it deliver a convention that reflects the will and emancipations of the grassroot party members.
The party’s spokesperson, Yusuf Mwawa has said this casting doubt on the possibility of having the convention this year as some party officials hinted in previous political rallies.
“You may wish to appreciate that the country’s General Elections have been shifted to September 2025 and party convention is not just an ordinary event, it is rather a strategic pathway towards an organised preparation to an elective process,” says Mwawa.
He discloses their National Executive Committee will announce the party’s revised calendar later.
Mwawa adds there is overwhelming interest from various individuals to compete at the party convention.
“It shows an enermous trust that members have towards the democratic values of UDF,” he explains.
The huge focus is certainly on who becomes the party’s torchbearer during the presidential election. UDF President Lilian Patel openly said she would not contest for the presidency.
But the party’s former president, Atupele Muluzi expressed readiness to contest for the position.
Earlier, Mzuzu University political analyst Chrispin Mphande tipped the party to invest more on its rebuilding exercise ahead of the polls.
He said: “The party needs to do a needs analysis to see what was there and what is there now. This is a party that had over 80 members of Parliament. They already have a base having been the first political party to govern after the advent of multiparty.”
Malawi Congress Party announced it would hold its convention in August 2024 while the embattled Democratic Progressive Party-DPP in July the same year.
MEC has projected that the country will have 10 957 490 eligible voters in the September 2025 General Elections based on data collected.
