Malawi’s Flames coach Patrick Mabedi has told Soccer Laduma, a South African Soccer Magazine that Gabadinho Mhango should apologize to Malawians for what he has done if he is to be welcomed back into the team.
Mabedi said this after the Moroka Swallows striker missed the flight ahead of Friday’s away clash against Liberia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.
The Malawi National Football Team coach said the other reason why Gaba has been left out is that he did not comply with instructions from the technical team to do a recovery session and send it to the physical trainer.
Mabedi refused to allow Mhango to join the squad after the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) made fresh arrangements for the player to travel to Monrovia today after missing his initial flight to Blantyre from Johannesburg on Sunday.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu told The Nation online that the coach’s decision was “purely on disciplinary grounds and that the door has not been closed on Gaba”.
Mhango however said he was ready to travel to Liberia if fresh arrangements are made ahead of this Friday’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier.
Mhango was supposed to meet his teammates in Addis Ababa but missed a flight from Or Tambo, South Africa to Ethiopia on Sunday.
