Granny arrested for grievous harm in Nkhotakota

A 54-year-old woman, Hawa Mzee is behind bars for allegedly committing an offence of acts intended to cause grevious harm to his grandson in Nkhotakota.

Nkhotakota police deputy publicist Sergeant Chisomo Chuma, Mzee is alleged to have assaulted his 9-year-old grandson who is a Standard 3 learner at Chia Primary School in the District, on July 10, 2024 at Chiutula Village.

Chuma said police learnt that on July 10, 2024, at around 6 O’clock in the evening, the suspect left for her garden where she allegedly caught the victim red-handed stealing bananas.

“Knowing the behaviour of her grandson, she thought of teaching him a lesson she grabbed the victim and tied both hands and assaulted him heavily before she put both of his hands on fire and sustained burnt wounds.

“The matter was reported to Nkhotakota Police on Wednesday July 10, 2024 by the victim’s mother,” said Chuma.

He said acting on the report, rushed to the scene of the crime and found the little boy crying uncontrollably leading to the arrest of the grandmother.

Hawa Mzee, who comes from Chiutula Village in Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district will appear before court soon to answer a charge of acts intended to cause grevious harm.
