The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has deported a Sri Lankan national Thavalaj Carupiah for contravening the country’s immigration laws.
Confirming the development to MBC, the Department’s National Spokesperson, Wellington Chiponde, said Carupiah was arrested and declared a prohibited immigrant in Malawi on 20 June 2022.
Chiponde further said after the arrest, the Sri Lankan national sought a court injunction and it was subsequently vacated by the Department of Immigration.
“He then went on hiding assisted by his lawyer and a pastor until his arrest this week by the Police,” said Chiponde.
The Department is therefore advising the Public that harbouring prohibited immigrants is a serious criminal offence and any person found doing so will face the law.
