Cat and mouse chase? Outspoken political activist, Bon Kalindo is in police custody again following his arrest in Lilongwe this afternoon over an alleged fresh charge of not honouring court bail conditions.
The Radar understands this is a completely different case not related to the one he was nabbed for alleged illegal electricity connection at his house in Area 25.
National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya declined to immediately comment when we called him. He pledged to return the call but didn’t.
However, Kalindo’s lawyer, Stanley Chirwa says police have arrested his client as he was coming out of the Lilongwe Magistrate Court where he went for an inter parte hearing over his earlier warrant of arrest .
“But as a matter of procedure that is not supposed to happen. My client was supposed to be called to court , or to be summoned because he was on bail on same charge on which the police have obtained another warrant of arrest for him,” Chirwa told #NationOnline.
Kalindo leads a grouping of concerned citizens under the banner, Malawi First which is pushing for the resignation of President Lazarus Chakwera for his alleged failure to manage state affairs.
Its Secretary General Redson Munlo describes the arrest as pathetic and a setback to Malawia democracy. He adds they are not aware where police have taken Kalindo to.
” He was picked in a vehicle with no registration number. I was trying to call him. It rang, then later it was switched off and I didn’t manage to talk to him,” says Munlo.
During his previous arrest, police in Lilongwe transfered Kalindo to Nkhunga Police Station in Nkhotakota; over 250 kilometers from the capital city.
But court ordered his immediate release.
