Mulli Cancels Trip To Bahamas To Mourn Chilima, Plane Crash Victims

MBL Holdings Limited Executive Chairperson Mr Leston Ted Mulli has cancelled his trip to participate in Afreximbank’s 31th Annual Meetings underway in Nassau, Bahamas to mourn the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima and other 8 plane crash victims.

Chilima, former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and 7 other people died on Monday after a Malawi Defense Force aircraft crashed.

The plane first went missing after airtrafficking controllers in Mzuzu where the Vice President was travelling to had instructed the pilot to return to Lilongwe due to bad weather.

However, after searching for 24 hours, the wreck of the plane was found on Tuesday at around 9am in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba District.

Mulli said he was deeply hurt with the developments hence cancelling the already paid for trip to the Afreximbank Annual Meeting which will run from June 12 to 15 2024.

Said Mulli: “I got the sad news while in South Africa intransit to Bahamas. I, therefore, decided to return home to mourn this terrible loss together with my fellow Malawians.

“I am devastated and heartbroken with this huge loss to Malawi nation.”

The President and Chairman of the board of Directors of Afreximbank Prof Benedict Oramah invited the business mogul and other business operators to attend the meetings because of their huge contribution on the African continent.

Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera has declared 21-days of mourning.

Mulli is also expected to attend the burial of Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima on Monday at his home village in Ntcheu district.
