South Africa’s media outlets are reporting that 20 out of the 74 people who have died in a fire accident in a multi-storey building on the centre of Johannesburg are Malawians.
The death toll is expected to rise, according to sources. Local authorities are yet to comment if they have any details related to the reports.
Reports say at least 12 children are among the killed while 43 people are injured in the blaze that broke out on Thursday.
Authorities said they had moved through the building searching for survivors and pulling out charred bodies and laying them on the streets.
The fire has now been extinguished, rescue officials said.
