There is now calm in Blantyre after disgruntled vendors earlier stoned a vehicle that had city council officials who conduct patrols around the city confiscating goods from those doing illegal vending.
A video clip that has gone viral on various social media cites show the angry vendors attacking the vehicle while condemning the council’s acts on top of their voices.
It took police intervention who fired teargas to disperse the vendors for sanity to return.
One of the vendors says it doesn’t make sense for the council officials to be confiscating the goods; arguing things are tough with the prevailing economic situation.
Unconfirmed reports indicate a police officer and a vendor are injured. But police are yet to confirm if they have made arrests.
