Former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer Collins Magalasi and other three accused persons have pleaded not guilty to money laundering and fraud charges. According to the state, the four siphoned K186 Million of the authority. Business lady Dorothy Shonga, former MERA Chief Procurement Officer Bright Mbewe and former Public Relations Officer Patrick Maulidi took the plea before High Court Judge Patrick Chirwa in Lilongwe. The accused are answering 16 counts relating to fraud, mis-procurement and money laundering.

The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has adjourned a case involving former MERA boss Collins Magalasi and Dorothy Shonga among others to 13th April, 2022 with the state to present their submissions within 7 days and the defendants to present theirs within 21 days. During the hearing, former MERA Procurement Officer Bright Mbewe was paraded as a state witness and was cross-examined on his involvement in MERA's internal procurement and disposal committee which procured various items worth million and lost 704 million kwacha.Director of Public Prosecutions - DPP Dr. Steven Kayuni says he is satisfied with their witnesses but will still wait for the magistrate to rule whether the accused are guilty.
