Ethiopian Airlines has resumed ticketing services for all travel agents in Malawi with effect from today, barely three weeks after suspending the same due to shortage of foreign currency in the country. The Airline's Area Manager for Malawi Andinet Ayichew has confirmed. He said the company’s decision to recommence the ticket sales locally follows a series of fruitful discussions with relevant government authorities. “We appreciate the involvement by all key stakeholders which has helped us to bring back uninterrupted service on the Malawi market for more than three decades,” said Ayichew. Ethiopian Airlines Suspend ticketing Services For All Travel Agents In Malawi

Ethiopian Airlines has suspended ticketing services for all travel agents in Malawi with effect from today, due to shortage of forex. Secretary for the Travel Agents Association of Malawi Eliza Chimbaya has confirmed receiving the communication this morning. She says concerns have been raised by the Ethiopian Airlines in recent months that the Reserve Bank of Malawi has been unable to remit money to their accounts due to dwindling forex reserves. This means that passengers traveling from Malawi will have to buy tickets in other countries. A source close to the decision however says that the decision does not affect ticketing for the Malawi Airlines in the interim.

Malawi’s forex shortage is threatening operations in the airline business, creating uncertainty on the future of the industry, Business News has learnt. Frustrated by events in the foreign exchange market in the country, some sources in the airline business have confided in Business News that some operators are now seeking an audience with key economic agencies in the country such as Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), ministries of Finance and Economic Affairs as well as Ministry of Transport and Public Works while gauging the future of their respective businesses.
