The High Court has set 6th March 2023 as a date it will commence trial in a K16.5 billion tax evasion case involving Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons (DWS) Limited executives and two MRA customs officers. Today, parties in the matter appeared before High Court Judge Ruth Chinangwa for direction on how the case will proceed. Chinangwa has directed that the court will on 13th October 2022 hear preliminary objections from both parties and trial will commence on 6th March 2023. From the commencement date, the court will be hearing the matter for two consecutive weeks, every month. By Staff Reporter Mapeto David White Head and Sons (MDWS) Directors Tax Invasion case will delay further as documents relating to the case are reportedly missing, officials from Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have confirmed. According to the officials, the documents which contain strong evidences for the said crime went missing on Wednesday. “Yes, the documents are nowhere to be seen,” said the source who opted for anonymity. The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Tuesday 21 September 2021 arrested six people from Mapeto (DWSM) Limited and Fortune Clearing Agents for allegedly conniving to defraud the Malawi Government of revenue amounting to MK252, 620, 236.81. The six include Faizal Gaffar Latif and Zarina Latif who are Directors of Mapeto (DWSM) Limited and the company’s Managing Director Mohamed Gaffar The Authority has also arrested an employee of the textile firm, Muhammad Yaseen, who is also the proprietor of Star Style Investments. Police in Blantyre acting on behalf of Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have arrested Faizal Latif, Director and owner of Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons on various tax law contraventions amounting to MK10.8 billion. He went into hiding on Friday pleading with Tonse Alliance top hierarchy to "return the favour" rendered to them during the 2019 and 2020 general elections where his company offered credit lines for party cloth supplies. By Alefa Mwate A Blantyre based business man Faizal Latif trading as Mapeto has been summoned by the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) for questioning over his role in the MK300 million cheque made to Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons (MDWS) as payment for immediate past ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cloth. In May this year, former governing DPP pressurized the then Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Collins Magalasi to pay for a DPP cloth meant to be used during its Fresh Presidential Elections (FPE) campaign. However, Mapeto did not deliver the cloth as agreed but instead Faizal Latif gave MK200 million cash to the party.
