Corruption at its best: Embattled Mapeto Executives tax invasion case’ documents missing

By Staff Reporter Mapeto David White Head and Sons (MDWS) Directors Tax Invasion case will delay further as documents relating to the case are reportedly missing, officials from Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have confirmed. According to the officials, the documents which contain strong evidences for the said crime went missing on Wednesday. “Yes, the documents are nowhere to be seen,” said the source who opted for anonymity. The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Tuesday 21 September 2021 arrested six people from Mapeto (DWSM) Limited and Fortune Clearing Agents for allegedly conniving to defraud the Malawi Government of revenue amounting to MK252, 620, 236.81. The six include Faizal Gaffar Latif and Zarina Latif who are Directors of Mapeto (DWSM) Limited and the company’s Managing Director Mohamed Gaffar The Authority has also arrested an employee of the textile firm, Muhammad Yaseen, who is also the proprietor of Star Style Investments. McKnight Banda and Chimwemwe Tembo, the Manager and officer of Fortune Limited Clearing Agents respectively, have also been arrested. Police in Blantyre acting on behalf of Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have arrested Faizal Latif, Director and owner of Mapeto David Whitehead and Sons on various tax law contraventions amounting to MK10.8 billion. He went into hiding on Friday pleading with Tonse Alliance top hierarchy to "return the favour" rendered to them during the 2019 and 2020 general elections where his company offered credit lines for party cloth supplies. Other officials arrested include: General Manager, Martin Mpata, Managing Director Mohamed Gaffar, Financial Controller Abdul Rashid Bakali, Procurement Manager Yaseen Muhamad.
