The 18th Agriculture Fair is underway at the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre with a call for players in the agriculture value chain to make the most of the platform in connecting with prospective and current business partners. Amid uncertainties surrounding the Affordable Inputs Programme-AIP, Centrer for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI wants the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture to summon Agriculture Minister Lobin Lowe to explain this including availability of fertilizer as rainy season approaches. In a letter, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa says they want government to come out clearly if it is proceeding with the AIP and the prices farmers will contribute towards purchasing the farm inputs. Lowe Suspend All Admarc Members Of Staff

Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe has sent on paid leave all Members of Staff of Admarc. He has also suspended all Admarc services except for social services. Lowe has said at a press briefing that the pronouncements are with immediate effect and that they aim at ensuring that the institution begins to tick. The other pronouncement that Lowe has made is that they are redefining Admarc. He has cautioned that no Admarc employee is expected to report for duties unless communicated otherwise. He says the pronouncements do not affect the sale of maize in hunger stricken districts.

Government Announced 2021/2022 Farm Gate Prices

Government has today announced the 2021/2022 farm gate prices. Minister of agriculture, Lobin Lowe made the announcement at a media briefing in Lilongwe. Among others, the minimum price for Maize is K220 per kg, Rice Polished K700 per kg, Rice Unpolished K300 per kg. While, Soya beans will be selling at K480 per kg, Groundnuts shelled K740 per kg, Pigeons Peas K420 per kg and Cotton K400 per kg. Lowe has directed all buyers to obtain Agricultural Produce Buying Licence from relevant authorities. Frighton Njolomole, President for Farmers Union of Malawi, has hailed government for timely releasing the prices.
