Governance commentator, Wonderful Mkhutche has described the introduced membership fees in the United Democratic Front-UDF as a welcome development but stresses the party should do more to regain its lost glory.
The party has embarked on an exercise of issuing Identity Cards and only paid up individuals will be recognized as bonafide members.
The memberships are categorized as follows: Chipani Changa at K 1000, Bronze at K5000, Ung’onoung’ono K20,000, Silver K50, 000, Gold, K75,000, Platinum K100, 000 and corporate at K500, 000
UDF spokesperson, Yusuf Mwawa says the initiative will help the party in developing a data base for its membership and claims the exercise doesn’t mean the party is broke.

He adds the IDs are in line with their strategic framework; adding this also reflects well to the party’s slogan: “Chipani Changa.”
Mwawa says money realized from the exercise will help to finance the party activities and buy materials for distribution to its members and supporters.
He explains: “Members need to be in the register for them to participate in activities such as representable electable positions as Members of Parliament, Councillor, National Executive Committee and all positions as stipulated in our Constitution.”
Mkhutche says this is the direction all parties in the country should follow.
” UDF should also seriously look into the issue of alliances for the election , saying chances are minimal of winning the general election if it goes solo,” says Mkhutche.
The Radar the party might go for its elective conference this year and its former president Atupele Muluzi has already shown interest to contest so that if he wins he should be party’s torchbearer in the 2025 presidential election.
