The Malawi Revenue Authority has disclosed that it has dismissed 82 workers since 2013 due to corruption.
MRA Commissioner, John Bizwick, disclosed this after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to end corruption at the institution.
Bizwick said among the offences committed include fraudulent clearance of new vehicles.
“Workers are investigated to audit their lifestyles and also if we have received a tipoff of any corruption involving employees,” said Bizwick.
Bizwick further said the country is losing a lot of money through tax evasion. He, therefore, said the MOU will help to reduce the malpractice among others.
“The public has recently nominated MRA as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country and we thought of doing something about this,” said Bizwick.
He said the two institutions have a common nature and scope of work therefore the agreement will help them to conduct joint interventions that are aimed at curbing corruption.
“We Will be able to share information of intelligence in tax crimes, fraud and corruption among others, ” added Bizwick.
On her part, ACB Director, Martha Chizuma said the two institutions are key in the fight against corruption.
“The MOU will help to protect the country’s revenue,” said Chizuma.
Chizuma said fighting corruption needs concerted efforts to achieve desired results.
She, therefore, said the authority has demonstrated commitment to fighting corruption in the country.
MRA and ACB first entered into an agreement in 2011, however, the implementation was not successful.
