The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has donated a vehicle worth over K40 million to Dedza District Council for a project that seeks to reduce teenage pregnancies among girls in the district.
The project is being implemented in
Traditional Authorities, Kachele, Chilikumwendo and Kaphuka
UNFPA and KOICA are funding the Action for teen mothers and adolescent girls project in the district intending to ensure girls and teenage mothers remain in school.
“As UNFPA we expect the council to transform lives of teen mothers for the better by being able to reach out even in hard-to-reach areas”, said UNFPA’s Miranda Tabifor.
Receiving the vehicle, District Commissioner for Dedza, Emmanuel Bambe, hailed the UN agency for supporting the district with a vehicle and ICT materials.
“The council approached UNFPA for support on transport sometime ago, now they have answered our request we are grateful,” said Bambe.
Dedza is among the districts in the country that have high numbers of teenage mothers. To some extent, this is fueling school dropout among girls.
