Deputy Minister of Health, Halima Daudi says the European Union (EU) funded Ufulu Wanga project being implemented in some of the country’s eight districts is a torch in defending the right of life, health and security of persons with albinism.
She was speaking Friday at the launch of the project in Dedza.
EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach says the condition of albinism is still very much misunderstood and due to the miscommunication and misunderstandings, persons of albinism are unable to enjoy their rights and remain highly marginalised and excluded from social economic life.
He however commended Government for its efforts in addressing the need of the minority group as cases of attacks on persons with albinism over the years have declined.
Both, Yoneco Executive Director MacBen Mkandawire and Standing Voice Executive Director, Boniface Massah hope the initiative will, among others, protect the plight of the persons with albinism in the country.
The EU has pumped in 350 thousand Euros for the Ufulu Wanga My Right project aimed at reaching about 5,000 persons with albinism in the districts of Dedza, Zomba, Ntcheu, Balaka,Mulanje, Machinga and Phalombe.
