Police in Mzuzu are holding a 41-year-old man, Moses Lukele, from Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo in Mzimba District, in custody.
Public Relations Office for Mzuzu Police Station, Hendrix Macheka said Lukele was arrested on August 13 at Kazuni in Rumphi District.
He said suspect has been apprehended for the illegal possession of a firearm, which he allegedly used to commit multiple robberies targeting motorcyclists, commonly known as “Akabaza” in the local language.
Macheka said: “The suspect is linked to a series of violent incidents that have raised alarm among local motorcyclists who rely on their bikes for transportation and livelihood.
“Lukele is suspected to be responsible for the deaths of two individuals during his robbery spree—one victim from Hilltop and another from Mzilabayingwe within Mzuzu Township.”
He said during the arrest, police recovered two motorcycles, which they believe were stolen by Lukele using the weapon.
Again, police in the city are urging anyone with additional information regarding Lukele’s activities or other related crimes to come forward and assist with law enforcement efforts.
Meanwhile, the police affirm their commitment to ensuring public safety and are actively investigating further incidents related to this case to prevent such criminal acts in the future.
