Lawyer and human rights advocate Alexius Kamangila issues warning: ‘FAKE page alert, be vigilant’

By Burnett Munthali

In a time when social media platforms have become key tools for communication, lawyer and human rights advocate Alexius Kamangila has raised an alarm on his official Facebook page. In a recent post titled “FAKE Page Alert, Be Vigilant,” Kamangila informed his followers about the existence of a fraudulent Facebook page impersonating him. The fake page has been misleading the public by disseminating false information under Kamangila’s name, causing concern among those who respect his legal and human rights work.

Kamangila, known for his outspoken advocacy on issues of governance, human rights, and justice in Malawi, emphasized the need for online vigilance. “This is a warning to all my followers and the general public,” he wrote. “There is a fake page using my name, which is sharing false content that does not reflect my views or work. Please be cautious and ensure you are following the correct official page.”

He further urged his followers to report the fake page to Facebook and not to engage with its content. The impersonation of high-profile figures on social media is not a new phenomenon, but in Kamangila’s case, it raises significant concerns as such fake pages can spread misinformation that could harm his reputation and the causes he advocates.

Kamangila’s real page has been instrumental in informing Malawians on key legal and social justice issues, making it a trusted source for many. His latest post underscores the growing challenges faced by public figures in safeguarding their online presence against such fraud.

For Kamangila, the fight against fake news and misleading online content continues to be a priority, as it threatens the very fabric of public trust. He ended his post with a strong call for cyber vigilance, reminding everyone to “verify before engaging,” ensuring that information consumed online comes from authentic sources.

This incident highlights the broader need for increased digital security measures and public awareness to prevent individuals and organizations from falling victim to such schemes. Kamangila’s proactive response sets an example for others in similar situations, reinforcing the importance of transparency and security in today’s digital age.
