Call to End Intimidation and Unlawful Detentions–Jumbe

The Time for Change Has Come: A Call to End Intimidation and Unlawful Detentions.

The winds of change are blowing fiercely, yet the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) clings to the old ways like a dying tree holding onto its withered leaves.

This is not the time for intimidation or silencing political opponents. It is a time for reflection and fulfillment of promises.

Malawians are watching closely as the government detains Kaliyati, an act that echoes the dark days of our past, where fear was used as a weapon to crush political opponents.

But as an African proverb reminds us, “A person who uses force is afraid of reason.” By detaining political opponents, the MCP shows fear, not strength.

It is a fear of the truth that echoes from the lips of the people—a truth that cannot be silenced by iron bars or shackles.

We are in a new era. Malawi has grown, and so too have its people. The days of ruling through intimidation are behind us.

“The wind does not break a tree that bends,” and the people of Malawi are demanding that the MCP bend to the will of the people, not break under the weight of outdated and oppressive tactics.

The continued harassment and arrests of critics will not shield the party from the coming storms of the 2025 elections.

As we approach these elections, let us remember another wise saying: “You cannot hide the smoke when the house is burning.”

No amount of arrests or intimidation will hide the fact that the MCP has failed to deliver on its promises. The people have been patient, but patience is not endless.

Malawi’s heart beats for genuine freedom, justice, and prosperity, not for a government that tightens its grip on power through force.

Winning elections is not done through harassment; it is done through action, through keeping promises made during the campaign.

We demand the unconditional release of Kaliyati, and we remind the government that “He who fears the sun will not become a chief.” The sun of truth is rising, and it cannot be hidden by the shadows of fear.

The people of Malawi will no longer be silenced. The government must choose: Will it stand on the side of justice, transparency, and progress?

Or will it continue to walk the path of intimidation, a path that leads only to defeat?

“A leader is a servant, not a master.” It is time for the MCP to serve the people, not to rule them through fear.

The people have spoken, and they will speak again in 2025. Let that voice be one of democracy, not oppression.

My pen is mightier than a Sword.
