Political commentators have warned against a growing trend of regionalism in Malawi’s 2025 general elections, as some candidates focus on specific geographical regions.
Analysts George Phiri and Victor Chipofya say this trend could fuel division among people based on geographic regional differences.
“Young people are not interested in candidates from their respective regions, but rather in strong manifestos that address their challenges,” Phiri said.
The trend has already been endorsed by some high-profile candidates, including MCP president Lazarus Chakwera and DPP president Peter Mutharika.
