The integrity of any election lies not on the day of voting but in the systems, processes, and preparations leading up to it.
As the 2025 elections approach, it is imperative to address the glaring irregularities in voter registration with urgency and fairness.
Correcting the flaws today will prevent chaos and mistrust tomorrow.
Irregularities That Threaten Democracy
Reports of doubled names in the Central and Northern regions, alongside the alleged deliberate registration of teenagers, paint a troubling picture.
Such discrepancies are not mere administrative errors; they have the potential to undermine the very foundation of democracy. If left unaddressed, this will translate into a rigged election, for, as the proverb goes, “A house built on a crooked foundation cannot stand.”
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) must rise above suspicion and tackle these issues with urgency and impartiality.
The time to act is now, for as the wise say, “Justice delayed is justice denied.”
Leadership Accountability
Leadership must embody responsibility and integrity. In light of these concerns, it is only right that Anabel Ntalimanja step down as a demonstration of accountability.
Leadership is not merely about holding office but about upholding trust.
“When the shepherd fails, the flock scatters.” To restore confidence, a fresh and transparent approach to resolving these irregularities is required.
Rejecting Electronic Vote Counting
The decision by MEC to use Smartmatic for electronic vote counting must be re-evaluated. While technology has its merits, it must never replace trust.
A manual counting system remains the most transparent and reliable, ensuring every vote is seen, counted, and accounted for.
“The wise count their sheep one by one; they do not rely on shadows.”
Extension of Registration Period
The voter registration process must be inclusive and considerate of the realities people face.
This is the rainy season—a time of ploughing and planting.
Coupled with fuel shortages, hunger, and economic challenges, many Malawians are unable to register within the current timeframe.
Moreover, those traveling from abroad to register closer to December 25 must not be disenfranchised.
Extending the registration period is not a favor but a necessity.
As the saying goes, “A journey is best completed when everyone is allowed to walk at their own pace.”
Call to Action
This is a plea for justice, transparency, and fairness.
MEC must address the irregularities decisively, extend the voter registration period, and prioritize manual vote counting.
The future of Malawi’s democracy depends on The path to a credible election.
The fair and credible election starts today, and failure to act will be a betrayal of the people’s trust.
For the sake of Malawi’s future, let justice and fairness prevail.
My pen is mightier than a sword.
