Alfred Chapulapula, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Shadow Member of Parliament for Soche Zingwangwa Constituency, has pledged to ramp up efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV), particularly among children in Chilobwe and nearby areas.
Speaking at a GBV sensitization meeting held at Naotcha Primary School ground over the weekend, Chapulapula emphasized the critical role of communities in protecting children from abuse. He called on residents to remain vigilant, not only for their own children but also for those of their neighbors, to curb the devastating impact of GBV.
“The effects of gender-based violence are not confined to individual families; they ripple through and harm the broader community,” Chapulapula said. He stressed that safeguarding children requires collective action and a shared responsibility among all community members.
The event aimed to raise awareness about GBV and was attended by shadow politicians from various political parties, traditional leaders, and government officials. The diverse gathering underscored the urgency of addressing GBV and highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to end violence against vulnerable groups.
Traditional leaders present at the meeting echoed Chapulapula’s sentiments, urging their communities to break the silence around GBV and actively report cases to the authorities. Government representatives also outlined ongoing initiatives to support survivors and strengthen legal measures to punish perpetrators.
As the campaign against GBV gains momentum in Soche Zingwangwa, Chapulapula’s efforts are seen as a vital step toward fostering safer communities and ensuring that children grow up in environments free from violence and abuse.
