Malawian chess players Dominic Chitsime and Alipo Namangale continue to battle at the Africa Schools Individual Chess Championship in Accra, Ghana. The duo played two games each today in rounds six and seven, showcasing their skills against some of the continent’s best young talents.

In round six, Alipo Namangale secured a crucial victory against Kenya’s Joseph Mwaniki, while Dominic Chitsime fell to Ghanaian Pille Jatin. The fortunes reversed in round seven, as Dominic redeemed himself with a win over Ghanaian Glenn Botswe, while Alipo was defeated by Jeshurum Tandoh, a Ghanaian player rated 1,512.

As the tournament heads into its final stretch, Alipo has accumulated four points, and Dominic has three points after seven rounds. Both players remain in contention for medals and qualification for the World Schools Chess Individual Championship in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia, in March 2025.

What’s at Stake?

The top three players in each category will earn medals and personal rights to participate in the World Schools Championship. Additionally, titles will be awarded in accordance with FIDE regulations.

Alipo Namangale is just half a point away from securing a conditional chess title, while Dominic needs 1.5 points from the remaining two games to achieve the same milestone. Both players also have a realistic chance of finishing in the top three, which would secure their place in the global tournament in Serbia.
