The Mchinji Police Station is mourning the tragic death of one of its officers, John Mwenye, who was fatally hit by a motorcycle while performing his duties at Mikayeli on Thursday. The loss has been described as a significant blow to the station and the community it serves.
Officer-in-Charge John Nkhoma expressed deep sorrow over Mwenye’s passing, highlighting the exceptional qualities that made him a valued member of the force. “He was a hardworking young man. Although he initially served in general duties, his remarkable instincts and dedication to his work earned him a transfer to the traffic department, where he made a significant contribution,” Nkhoma said. Speaking with evident grief, he added that the station had lost one of its most promising officers.
Mwenye’s untimely death has left a void not only within the police force but also in his young family. He is survived by two children, aged 5 and 2, who now face life without their father. The family, together with colleagues and friends, is preparing to bid farewell to the fallen officer, with burial arrangements already underway.
Nkhoma was on his way to the mortuary to meet the family of the deceased and assist with funeral preparations when he spoke to the press. Mwenye will be laid to rest on Saturday in a ceremony expected to draw mourners from across the district, including members of the police force and community leaders.
