Open Letter to His Excellency,Dr. Lazarous Mccarthy Chakwera,President of the Republic of Malawi

Subject: A Demand for Accountability, Transparency, and a Sincere Apology

Dear President Chakwera,

I write to you as a concerned and disappointed senior citizen—a representative of the many Malawians who have placed their trust in your leadership. Your State of the Nation Address on Friday, 14th February, was not just a routine political exercise; it was a platform on which you claimed monumental achievements over your four-year tenure. You boasted of new hospitals, schools, and various infrastructural developments that, in reality, remain nothing more than promises and rhetorical flourishes.

It is both disheartening and unacceptable that while you painted a picture of national progress, many of us have seen little, if any, tangible improvement in our communities. Your speech appeared less a genuine account of development and more a calculated campaign gimmick—an attempt to secure favor ahead of the elections scheduled for 16th September 2025.

The people of Malawi deserve more than empty words and unfounded claims. We deserve a government that is transparent, accountable, and committed to real, visible progress. As our elected leader, you are not above the truth, and you are certainly not immune from the responsibility to deliver on the promises you make. Your failure to provide evidence of the purported projects is a disservice to the nation and a betrayal of the trust bestowed upon you.

Therefore, I demand that you:

Issue a Public Apology: Acknowledge the discrepancies between your claims and the reality on the ground. A sincere apology to the people of Malawi is the first step toward restoring the confidence that has been eroded by these unsubstantiated assertions.

Submit to Rigorous Accountability: Allow citizens, civil society organizations, and relevant oversight bodies to verify the claims made in your address. Let every project and promise be scrutinized to ensure that your leadership is measured by real results—not by the sound of empty rhetoric.

Demonstrate Transparent Governance: Provide clear, accessible reports and evidence of all developmental projects undertaken during your tenure. Only through transparency can you begin to rebuild the trust that is critical to effective governance.

The future of Malawi hinges on leadership that respects the intelligence and rights of its citizens. We are no longer willing to be placated by grand statements that fail to manifest in tangible benefits. Our nation deserves a leader who not only speaks of development but also ensures that progress is visible in every community, in every home, and in every institution.

As the electorate prepares to make a decisive choice in the upcoming elections, it is imperative that your performance be judged on facts and outcomes—not on empty promises. We, the people of Malawi, are resolute in our demand for truth, accountability, and genuine progress.

I urge you to reflect on this criticism and take immediate, meaningful action to address our concerns. Our nation’s future—and the well-being of every Malawian—depends on it.

Sincerely,

Willard Mhone
Senior Citizen and Concerned Citizen of Malawi
